De bestandsuitbreiding van Apple_Partition_Map is gekoppeld aan de Apple Partition Map (APM) -schema's die zijn geïntroduceerd op Macintosh II -computers. De APM wordt gebruikt om de organisatie op laag niveau te definiëren van gegevens over schijven die zijn opgemaakt voor oudere Macintosh en PowerPC Macs.
