What is an .X64 file?

The x64 is not a specific type of file, but rather encompasses *all* known C64 disk types (hard disk, floppies, etc).

The x64 is created by prepending a 64-byte header to an existing emulator image (1541, 1581, etc) and setting specific bits which describe what type of image follows.

Files with x64 file extension are created by prepending a 64-byte header to an existing emulator image and it set up specific bits to describe the following types of images.

How to open:

Use VICE to work with *.x64 disk images.

How to convert:

As far as we know, this .x64 file type can't be converted to any other file format. This is usually the case of system, configuration, temporary, or data files containing data exclusive to only one software and used for its own purposes. Also some proprietary or closed file formats cannot be converted to more common file types in order to protect the intellectual property of the developer, which is for example the case of some DRM-protected multimedia files.
