The vhdx file extension is associated with the Hyper-V virtualizing technology presented in operating system Microsoft Windows 8, also used by Windows 10.

The vhdx file contains virtual hard disk image in similar file format like Microsoft Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) format, but supports virtual disks larger than 2040 GB (maximum is 16 TB) and is resilient to power failure events.

Hyper-V is virtualization system for x86-64 based systems. First version of Hyper-V is distributed with the Microsoft Windows Server 2008. The new version of Hyper-V that uses VHDX file format was introduced with Windows 8 Developer Preview.

These files can always be found in default Windows 8 backup archives.
