What is an .VDI file?

File extension vdi is associated with VirtualBox, a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86-64 based platform that runs on multiple operating systems and is currently developed by Oracle.

The vdi files are virtual disk images (VDI) stored in VirtualBox proprietary file format. Virtual Disk Images are container format  used to store all virtualized data and virtualized operating system in one file (virtualized physical disc).

VirtualBox contains command line tool named VboxManage that is able to change many settings in virtual disk images as well as convert VDI files to VHD Microsoft Virtual Hard Disk and VMDK VMWare virtual disk file formats.
