What is an .TAP file?

File extension tap is used for a special tape file for a ZX Spectrum emulator by G.A. Lunter.

The tap file contains blocks of tape-saved data. All blocks start with two bytes specifying how many bytes will follow (not counting the two length bytes).

Then raw tape data follows, including the flag and checksum bytes. The checksum is the bitwise XOR of all bytes including the flag byte.

TAP format was used for some C64 tape images as well.

Files with tap extension are mainly related to some emulators of ZX Spectrum computers developed by Sinclair Research. A tap file contains image of cassette tape with software.
