What is an .MIM file?

MIME = Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.

It refers to an official Internet standard that specifies how messages must be formatted.

The MIME format is used to encode:

  • Text in character sets other than ASCII
  • Non-text attachments: audio, video, images, application programs etc.
  • Message bodies with multiple parts
  • Header information in non-ASCII character sets

The mime files are encoded and decoded by e-mail client. However, some compression tools, like WinZip are able to decode attachments from mime file.

Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extensions also use .mime file extension.
