What is an .MIME file?

File extension mime is related to MIME, the multi-purpose internet mail extension.

A protocol for transmitting non-text information across the Internet. Basically, non-ASCII data is converted to ASCII for transmission and then converted back at the receiving end. MIME encoding (originally mmencode and now mimencode) is typically used and is a replacement for uuencode since that encoding scheme does not translate across all mail systems. It is a very flexible format.
