The dotm file extension is associated with Microsoft Word, a powerful authoring program that gives you the ability to create and share documents by combining a comprehensive set of writing tools with the easy-to-use Microsoft Office Fluent user interface, which is part of Microsoft Office.

The dotm files are used in Microsoft Word 2007 and higher for document template files.

The *.dotm templates are used, when users wants to create several *.docx documents with same formatting and with additional macros. Developers can pro grammatically determine if any macro-enabled code exists in a WordprocessingML document by inspecting the package file and can remove those parts, so that the code can cause no harm.

They serve the same purpose as the Word template files (*.dot), but use the new file extensions and file formats for Word documents based on Open XML data format. The dotm files use ZIP compression for smaller file sizes.
