Das .MCIF -Format wurde erstellt, um die Funktionen des .cif -Dateiformates zu erweitern. Das Format ähnelt dem CIF -Format eng, kann aber auch magnetische Raumgruppen speichern, was nach Harold T. Stokes und Brandon J. Campbell erweiterte CIF -Wörterbücher durch Hinzufügen magnetischer Tags.
