De BSDL -bestandsuitbreiding is gekoppeld aan de Boundary Scan -beschrijvingstaal die wordt gebruikt voor elektronische testdoeleinden.
Het BSDL -bestand wordt opgeslagen in een eenvoudig tekstformaat en de inhoud ervan is zichtbaar in een teksteditor, zoals Windows Kladblok, Notepad ++, GEDIT, Textedit etc.
