What is an .XYZ file?

The xyz file extension is commonly used for XMOL molecule model files. These are used in cheminformatics applications and on the web for storing and exchanging 3D molecule models.

The xyz file is stored in plain text tabular format. Represents a single chemical compound. Stores atomic coordinates and meta-information. This format does not store chemical bond information.

Developed in 1990 at the Minnesota Supercomputer Center.

MIME types:
chemical/x-xyz
chemical/x-pdb

Files with xyz extension are data files with atomic and other chemical data in text tabular format.

How to open:

Use HyperChem to open *.xyz files. Also you can use any text editor to view content of *.xyz files.

How to convert:

As far as we know, this .xyz file type can't be converted to any other file format. This is usually the case of system, configuration, temporary, or data files containing data exclusive to only one software and used for its own purposes. Also some proprietary or closed file formats cannot be converted to more common file types in order to protect the intellectual property of the developer, which is for example the case of some DRM-protected multimedia files.
