What is an .XWD file?

The xwd file extension is mainly related to X Window bitmap pictures.

This is a format for storing bitmaps of screen captures of the X Window system. There are a large number of variations of this format, depending on the type of graphics adapter the user has (monochrome, fixed colors, color images with palettes, TrueColor and more).
