What is an .XM file?

File extension xm seems to be mainly used for a special audio format from FastTracker 2. The program is no longer developed, but the format is still supported by many current MOD players.

The xm file represents audio stored in 8 / 16-bits, mono sound format. It uses MIDI data and sound samples to compose songs. It is similar to a .S3M or .MOD file, but is saved in the Fasttracker format.

MIME types:
audio/x-mod
audio/xm

Files with xm suffix are in most cases audio modules that have been created and saved in the FastTracker 2 program.

How to open:

Several media players should be capable of playback of .xm files. Use Awave Studio if you need to edit .xm files.

How to convert:

Most audio samples can be converted to other format in suitable programs.
