The xbrl file extension is primarily used for XML-based documents written in the Extensible Business Reporting Language.

XBRL was developed to create a standard for financial data based communication (financial data, business data, financial statements). It is often used in various accounting / banking software. XBRL file format is stored in XML simple text file format.

Files with xbrl file extension can be found as special interchange finance data in Extensible Business Reporting Language format.

These files can be viewed in any text editor. However *.xbrl files are meant to be used in specialized financial programs.

Software that can work and import XBRL format can also most likely export it to something else.
