What is an .WTV file?

The wtv file extension is mainly related to a video format introduced with Windows Media Center.

The WTV Windows Media Center video format is successor of the DVR-MS Windows Media Center video format and was introduced in Windows 7.

WTV format contains video in MPEG-2 stream and audio stream uses MPEG-1 Layer II or Dolby Digital AC-3 (ATSC A/52) audio format.

Microsoft developed an update for the Microsoft Windows Vista, that enables playback of WTV video files in the Microsoft Windows Vista Media Player.

This wtv file type entry was marked as obsolete and no longer supported file format.

This type of file is no longer actively used and is most likely obsolete. This is typically the case for system files in old operating systems, file types from long discontinued software, or previous versions of certain file types (like documents, projects etc.) that were replaced in higher versions of their original programs.

Files with wtv file extension can be usually found as TV recordings made using Windows Media Center and captured using TV tuner.

How to open:

Use Windows Media Center or Nero Vision (supported from version 6.4.17.0 NERO 9 Reloaded).

How to convert:

In Windows 7 go to the folder where your recorded TV files are stored (usually C:\Users\Public), right-click the file that you want to convert, and then click Convert to .dvr-ms Format.
