What is an .WPS file?

File extension wps is mainly associated with Microsoft Works, an office suite produced by Microsoft, which was offered as smaller, less expensive, and with fewer features than the Microsoft Office suite. Its core functionality includes a word processor, a spreadsheet and a database.

These wps files were used for document files in older versions of Microsoft Works.

The WPS format was discontinued by Microsoft in 2006 and was replaced by the standard Microsoft Word DOC format.

Microsoft Word will be able to open, edit and save wps documents, when the Microsoft Works 6–9 File Converter is installed in the computer.

Some OpenOffice.org variants support import of the wps documents via libwps library:

  • OxygenOffice Professional
  • NeoOffice
  • Your Office Suite
  • LibreOffice

MIME types:
application/vnd.ms-works
application/x-msworks-wp
zz-application/zz-winassoc-wps
text/plain

This wps file type entry was marked as obsolete and no longer supported file format.

This type of file is no longer actively used and is most likely obsolete. This is typically the case for system files in old operating systems, file types from long discontinued software, or previous versions of certain file types (like documents, projects etc.) that were replaced in higher versions of their original programs.

A wps file extension is associated with Microsoft Works and used for its default text document format. Works is a discontinued product, however many documents are still written in WPS format. Microsoft Word, and some other word processors like OpenOffice.org Writer or LibreOffice Writer are also able to open *.wps files.

How to open:

WPS is not well supported format. Microsoft Works and Word should both be able to handle them, as well as some other third-party word processors like LibreOffice Writer.*.wps files can also be viewed with Microsoft Word Viewer 2003.

How to convert:

Microsoft developed converter, that can convert WPS Works documents, called Microsoft Works 6–9 File Converter. It is available for download at Microsoft Website. Another way, how to convert WPS Microsoft Works document, is to save the *.wps file in Microsoft Works or Microsoft Word via FILE|Save menu to another document format.
