What is an .WBK file?

The wbk file extension is primarily related to a backup format used in version of MS Word 2007 or earlier.

It seems this file was generated as some sort of secondary backup (by renaming the actual document) when the user enabled "always create backup copy" function in the programs settings.

This worked in conjunction with .asd files that were used as auto-backups, to recover un-saved document in case the program was suddenly terminated.

This wbk file type entry was marked as obsolete and no longer supported file format.

This type of file is no longer actively used and is most likely obsolete. This is typically the case for system files in old operating systems, file types from long discontinued software, or previous versions of certain file types (like documents, projects etc.) that were replaced in higher versions of their original programs.

Files with wbk file extension can be mainly found as document backups generated by MS Word 2007 or older, if the "always create backup copy" is enabled.

How to open:

You should be able to just rename .wbk to .doc and work with this format.

How to convert:

Once the suffix is changed back to .doc, you can work with this file much like any other Word document.
