The vmsg file extension is best known to be used for Versit Message Format, a standard for saving instant messages from various communication programs.

Whilst most programs have their own unique system nowadays, in past many programs based their saved messages in vMsg format approved by Versit Consortium, which was a multivendor initiative founded by Apple Computer, AT&T, IBM and Siemens in the early 1990s to standardize certain specifications for exchanging personal data over the Internet.

CompuServe service for example used this specification.

Some other file types for saving instant messaging conversation can still be based on VMSG but have their unique file extension. Also often used for SMS backups.

Files in vmsg file extension can be found as saved instant messaging conversations from programs that still use the VMSG specification for their messages.

How to convert:

You can find tools, such as vmsg2csv that should capable of exporting data from *.vmsg files to other formats, for example CSV (Comma Separated Value).
