The vmsd file extension is associated with VMware Workstation a virtualization software used to create virtual computers on one physical machine.

The vmsd file is a centralized file for storing information and metadata about virtual machine snapshots saved in snapshots manager within VMware Workstation.

Snapshot file contains saved state of system for certain virtual machine (you can save various states of virtual computer like e.g. Windows 10 before updates, Windows 10 after updates, some tests and you can still working with all of them or switch between them). This feature is very useful for software testing and development etc.

This file must be together in one directory with other VMware virtual machine files like .vmdk, .vmx, .vmsn etc..
