What is an .URL file?

The url file extension is used in Microsoft Windows operating systems to store Internet shortcut - URL (Uniform Resource Locator) with additional information (icon, icon path, date modified, paths etc.).

The classic URL file format is stored in simple text and it has a format similar to an ini file.
