The stem file extension is associated with the Stems an audio format developed by Native Instruments and used to store song in various stems (multi-channel audio), like a drums stem, a bass line stem, a harmony stem, and a lead stem.

The Stems is open source format developed for DJs, which uses MP4 container to store stems and it is playable in various audio players that support MP4 playback.

Songs in Stems format sells Beatport, Juno, and Traxsource.

The default name of Stems file is: nameofsong.stem.mp4

However if you have set hide file extensions option in your operating system, you will see: nameofsong.stem file.
