The slm file extension is nowadays mainly related to Gallery Lock, an app for Android that allows users to hide photos and other pictures on their smartphones.

The slm file represents somewhat altered version of the original "hidden" picture which is located in a hidden folder on the SD card in the following location:

/mnt/sdcard/.gallery_lock/

Basically, the 1024 bytes of data is added to the begging on the image (*.jpg in most cases) and the extension is renamed to slm.

How to open:

You can most likely recover these files only if you enable it using Gallary Lock.
