What is an .SDF file?

The sdf file extension is most likely best know for its use in Microsoft SQL Server for a compact database files, also used in various third-party software programs as embedded database files for storing various data in single file like using Microsoft SQL server.

The typical .sdf file contains the complete contents of the database and can be up to 4 GB. SQL Server Compact can access and modify the database file, both on a smart device and on desktop computers by using SQL Server Management Studio and other tools.

Default software for working with sdf files is Visual Studio, but it supports SQL Server compact edition databases only to version 2012. In newer versions you need to install SQL Server Compact/SQLite Toolbox add-on to it.
