SBF backup files are stored only on SD memory card in \data\backup\ directory. The content of SBF file is in binary file format and can be opened only in the Backup and Restore.
The Backup and Restore application doesn't have to be installed in every Google Android mobile phone. The Backup and Restore application is pre-installed in the Sony Xperia phones released for year 2010 with installed Google Android version 2.1 Eclair (Xperia X10i, Xperia X10a, Xperia X10 Mini, Xperia X10 Mini Pro, Xperia X8).
In Xperia phones for year 2011 and Xperia X10i or X10a with official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update is not Backup and Restore pre-installed, however on Sony Ericsson website is it still available for download.
The SBF file format (Single Binary File) is also used by the Motorola phones Droid 2, Droid Pro and Droid X. Motorola SBF file contains factory data (factory firmware image) used to restore phone to default factory settings. SBF files for Motorola phones are being modified by fans to customize and root their phones. The *.sbf files for Motorola phones can be installed via Motorola RSD Lite application.
