What is an .RLE file?

The rle file extension is traditionally used for one of the many raster (bitmap) image formats. These can be generally still open in program like XnView.

Of the most common incarnations of RLE format include:

  • Utah raster bitmap image - format developed by Spencer Thomas at the University of Utah Department of Computer Science. The first version appeared around 1983. 
  • ADEX Corporation Chromagraph series of graphics.
  • Intergraph image format

Files with rle file extension are typically encountered by users as  raster images in one of the many formats that used this extension.

Several graphics editors or specialized converters still support RLE format and should be able to conver the data.
