What is an .REGTRANS-MS file?

The regtrans-ms file extension used by Microsoft Windows for desktop and servers for temporary files, that store changes in registry.

Typically, regtrans-ms files are created dynamically to prevent the registry becoming corrupt. Basically whenever user make a setting change, it will be written to a temporary created regtrans-ms file, before being written to the real file NTuser.dat, that contains users registry data. They are usually located in User account folder.

regtrans-ms file location:

C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\
C:\Users\"user"\

The purposes is to create a recovery option, should something go wrong and avoid possible registry corruption.

Same basically goes for blf format as well, it is often found in the same place as regtrans-ms.

Files with .regtrans-ms file extension can be found as special temporary files for registry changes done by the user in Windows Vista and later versions. This dynamic mechanism is in place to prevent system registry corruption.

How to open:

You can edit registry entries with a text editor. However, these are just temporary files with changes, so there is kinda no point in changing them.
