The r3d file extension is mainly related to a multimedia format from Red Digital Cinema. This format is used in all Red cameras as the default recording format.

R3D is a proprietary audio/video file format owned by the Red Digital Cinema Camera Company and featuring lossy compression for video contents and lossless for audio contents. Generally these videos are of much greater resolution and quality compared to standard HD.

Files with r3d file extension are multimedia files recorded using Red Digital Cinema cameras.

You can open and work with this format mainly in the REDCINE-X program provided by Red Digital Camera. However, some other professional video editing tools can work with this program.

Can probably be export to more common multimedia formats like MPEG.
