File extension pwi is associated with InkWriter, Note Taker and Pocket Word applications, developed by Microsoft Corporation. These applications are part of Windows Mobile mobile operating system and Microsoft Office Mobile.

The Pocket Word is a compact, lighter version of Microsoft Word designed for handhelds and pocket computers.

The pwi files are used for personal notes.

Notes stored in Windows Phone can be synchronized with Microsoft Outlook that is also able to export notes to the Rich Text file format (rtf file extension).

This type of file is no longer actively used and is most likely obsolete. This is typically the case for system files in old operating systems, file types from long discontinued software, or previous versions of certain file types (like documents, projects etc.) that were replaced in higher versions of their original programs.

Files with pwi extension can be most notably found as text documents created in one of the several older programs or mobile apps, such as Pocket Word for Windows Mobile.

How to open:

PWI format was mainly used in Notes app in older Windows Mobile.based smart phones (HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and etc.). The Note program creates a *.pwi file which, when transferred over to the PC, opens in Word by default, if you double click on it. You can try renaming the file with a .PWI extension and see if that works. If it does not, try opening Word and then use the File | Open menu item and navigate to the file in question, and then try to open it that way.

How to convert:

You can open the *.pwi files in Microsoft Word and save them in another format.
