What is an .PARAM file?

The param file extension is associated with CASTEP, a software package which uses density functional theory to provide a good atomic-level description of all manner of materials and molecules, originally developed by Prof. M.C. Payne.

The .param files contains all of the parameters which the user requires within the calculation. The parameters can be specified in any order but only one parameter must be specified per line. The most fundamental parameter is the task (there are other types of CASTEP calculation besides geometry optimization).

How to open:

Use CASTEP to work with *.param files.

How to convert:

As far as we know, this .param file type can't be converted to any other file format. This is usually the case of system, configuration, temporary, or data files containing data exclusive to only one software and used for its own purposes. Also some proprietary or closed file formats cannot be converted to more common file types in order to protect the intellectual property of the developer, which is for example the case of some DRM-protected multimedia files.
