What is an .OGV file?

File extension ogv is associated with video compression format Ogg Vorbis. It is roughly comparable to other formats used to store and play digital music, such as mp3, vqf, aac, and other digital audio formats. It is different from these other formats because it is completely free, open, and unpatented.

Ogg is the name of Xiph.org's container format for audio, video, and metadata. Vorbis is the name of a specific audio compression scheme that's designed to be contained in Ogg. Note that other formats are capable of being embedded in Ogg such as FLAC and Speex.

Illuminable filters will let you play your Ogg Vorbis files in Windows Media Player, and other DirectShow based players. Players not based on DirectShow do not need these filters.

MIME types:
video/ogg

Files with ogv  extension are video files compressed with Ogg Vorbis video codec. This format can be played with some media players with proper codec installed, such as VLC player.
