What is an .OFX file?

File extension ofx is associated with Open Financial Exchange, a substitute to the the ofc file format based on SGML file format that was originally founded in 1997 by Intuit, Microsoft, and Checkfree (Fiserv) and later re-launched in 2015 by Open Financial Exchange Consortium.

Open Financial Exchange is a unified specification for the electronic exchange of financial data (transactions, statements) between financial institutions, businesses and consumers via the Internet.

Files with ofx extension are generally financial data files in Open Finance Exchange format. Used in many programs.

Many accountig programs support OFX format and can work with it. Some spreadsheet programs can also import the data from it to a table like structure.
