File extension odt is used by many, mainly open source word processors (Apache OpenOffice Writer, LibreOffice Writer) for their default text document format.

ODT file format is a text format based on OpenDocument Format scheme.

The OpenDocument Format (ODF) is an open XML-based document file format for office applications to be used for documents containing text, spreadsheets, charts, and graphical elements.

The file format makes transformations to other formats simple by leveraging and reusing existing standards wherever possible. As an open standard under the stewardship of OASIS, OpenDocument also creates the possibility for new types of applications and solutions to be developed other than traditional office productivity applications.

A typical .odt file contains formatted text created in word processor.

Files with odt extension is used for the default text document format of many open source word processors, like OpenOffice.org Writer. ODT documents can be opened in all commercial and free word processors.

How to open:

ODT format is widely supported by probably every modern word processor and as such, can be easily opened in any of them. Even Windows 7 WordPad can open .odt files.

How to convert:

To convert ODT document to other format, simply open it in word processor and save to another document format, such as DOC, DOCX. It can also be exported to PDF.
