What is an .MXF file?

File extension mxf is primarily associated with the Material Exchange Format, which was originally developed by the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) to act as an container format for wrapping video, audio, and other related metadata.

MXF format is also known as "digital equivalent of videotape" because the linear structure of MXF reminds classic video tape.
