The mtv file extension is mainly associated with MTV file format supposedly created to allow video playback capabilities on inexpensive Chinese-made portable MP4 players without increasing the cost of those players with the license royalties (and more processor power).

The format operates by displaying a series of raw uncompressed rgb 565/555 image frames while playing MP3 audio but as the files are of low resolution and frame rate, sizes are comparable to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. (in a bytes-per-minute sense). Encoding and decoding are less processor-intensive than other contemporary formats, as in fact very little "encoding" is actually done.

Files with mtv file extension can be found as videos in MTV format used by some portable MP4 multimedia players.

How to open:

Although not well supported, you may find some media players capable of playback of this format.

How to convert:

Conversion to other video formats should be possible, provided you find a program that still supports this format. There may be a program called MTV Video Converter, but it looks like it was discontinued years ago.
