What is an .MSU file?

The msu file extension is mainly used for files that contain Microsoft Update Standalone Package.

These files are typically used in Windows Vista and later to install updates and hotfixes through Windows Update service.

MSU archive contains:

  • Windows update metadata
  • CAB file with update data
  • XML file including MSU content
  • properties data for Windows Update

Files with msu file extension can be most often found as installation packages for Windows Update. Opening these files will result in opening of Windows Update service and installation of its content.


How to open:

If you double click (open) on *.msu file, the installer will automatically start the update. Also you can use expand and pkgmgr commands in the command prompt.

How to convert:

There is no reason to convert .msu files to other formats and it is not even possible.
