What is an .MPX file?

File extension mpx is mostly known to be related to Microsoft Project project management software. The mpx files are in ASCII format and were used Microsoft Project 4.0, Microsoft Project 4.1, and Microsoft Project 98.

This format was dropped in MS Project 2000 in favor of modern formats.

MIME types:
application/x-project

This mpx file type entry was marked as obsolete and no longer supported file format.

This type of file is no longer actively used and is most likely obsolete. This is typically the case for system files in old operating systems, file types from long discontinued software, or previous versions of certain file types (like documents, projects etc.) that were replaced in higher versions of their original programs.

Files with mpx extension can be mainly found as export files from some earlier version of Microsoft Project software. Used for exchange and sharing purposes.

How to open:

These files were used in old versions of Microsoft Project, but even some later versions should still support MPX format.

How to convert:

It may still be possible to import .mpx files to latest Microsoft Project and produce a new project file based on the data from the original.
