The markdown file extension is also occasionally used for files written in the Markdown markup language.

This language is used to quickly create easy to read and write text and then quickly convert them to XHTML format. Adopted by several programs and libraries, such as RDiscount, Redcarpet, BlueCloth, Kramdown, Maruku etc.

Files with markdown file extension can sometimes be found as documents or source codes written in the Markdown markup language.
