What is an .M4P file?

The m4p file extension is used for a proprietary version of AAC (advanced audio coding) for the MP4 file format with Digital Rights Management developed by Apple, for the use in music files downloaded from their iTunes Music Store.

These m4p files are protected aac audio files downloaded from the iTunes Music Store, that incorporates Apple Computer's "Fairplay" DRM copy protection, which limits the number of computers the file can be played on.

In order to play a protected m4p file, you have to authorize your computer using Apple iTunes, which is done by entering a username with correct password for the account that downloaded the audio file. Up to five computers can be authorized with the same account.
