File extension m2t is used for a  MPEG-2 transport stream container format used to store audio and video data and it is the native media format for Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) standards and Advanced Television Systems Committee  (ATSC) standards.

MPEG-2 transport stream file format was developed for terrestrial or satellite broadcasting, because it contains error corrections and stream synchronization features, that are useful for transmission integrity, even with bad signal.

The maximal resolution of the video is 1080i. Audio is stored in AC-3 Dolby Digital audio format or in Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format.

Files with m2t extension are in most cases video files in MPEG-2 transport video stream file format  which were especially in the past mostly used for terrestrial or satellite broadcasting.

How to open:

Use VLC media player or Windows Media Player to play *.m2t files.

How to convert:

Most modern video converters offer the option to convert *.m2t files to another file format.
