What is an .GHO file?

The gho file extension is associated with Norton Ghost. Norton Ghost 2003 and earlier versions of Norton Ghost create backup images in GHO file format.

Norton Ghost 12.0, Norton Ghost 14.0, and Norton Save & Restore 2.0 do not support GHO file format.

Norton Ghost 9.0 and later versions create backup images in the V2I file format. You cannot restore the .gho image files using these products.

However, you can use the Ghost Explorer to restore the individual files and folders from the gho file.

The gho files are backup image files used by Norton Ghost. The program creates an image of the hard drive and its contents. You can later use the gho file to recover the entire hard drive or individual files. But here are some limitations with GHO files such us maximum file sizes of 2 GB.

For drives larger than 2 GB, a series of GHO files will be created with a file naming system of either file.gho, file001.ghs, file002.ghs or file.gho, file 001, file 002 etc, depending on the version of Ghost used. In addition to the file size limitations, GHO files can also be encrypted for security reasons.

A gho file extension is used for backup images created by the earlier versions of Norton Ghost backup utility. There are several versions of this format for each respective version of Norton Ghost.

How to open:

Use Norton Ghost of the right version to access the .gho disk image.

How to convert:

Use Norton Ghost to transform *.gho files to other supported formats.
