The gfs file extension is associated with Microsoft SharePoint Workspace, known as Microsoft Groove in previous version.

The gfs file is a stub file that provides a point of contact between the original file contents and the Microsoft Windows file system for a file that is fetched by a member of a Groove File Sharing workspace or a SharePoint Workspace Shared Folder workspace.

If you delete the gfs file, or if you change the gfs extension and then open the file, the file will be likely to be irreparably damaged by the opening application. This damage makes the original file contents unavailable from either the workspace or Windows.
