What is an .GED file?

File extension ged is used for GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communication) file format developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a standard for family history files. Used in many genealogy programs, such as Family Historian, Family Tree Builder.

A .ged file is stored in simple text ANSEL, UNICODE or ASCII file format and viewable in any text editor.

Files with ged extension are in most cases files that contain GEDCOM family history data which are used by various genealogy applications.


How to open:

Use Family Historian, or Family Tree Builder to open *.ged GEDCOM files.

How to convert:

Use compatible tools to export *.ged files to other formats.
