What is an .FLA file?

The fla file extension is used for projects created by Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash).

Adobe Flash is used for creating animations, banners, movies or whole apps, flash websites or games.

The fla files are used for the basic project file, which are used in the development context. This file contains library of objects and source files needed for creating an animation or whatever flash developer wants.
It should contain all the settings, layers, scripts and libraries with vector graphics, sounds, pictures, texts, scripts, videos etc.

After its development, a Flash project needs to be "published" or "compiled" for the use on the Web. It then gets a swf extension which can be played with an Adobe Flash player.

An fla file extension is used for editable Flash animations, apps, movies etc. Usually used before the flash project is finalized during its development. Can be opened in Adobe Flash.

How to open:

The *.fla files can be opened in to its native application the Adobe Flash. Adobe Flash is a part of the Adobe Creative Suite.

How to convert:

You can use Adobe Flash to export the contents of *.fla files in to the another multimedia file format.
