What is an .DJVU file?

The djvu file extension is associated with DjVu file format, an image format designed to store bitmaps of scanned documents, especially those containing text and line drawings.

The format is increasingly important because of its use in the Million Book Project and the One Laptop per Child project.

DjVu typically achieves compression ratios about 5 to 10 times better than existing methods such as JPEG or GIF for color documents, and 3 to 8 times than TIFF for black and white documents.

Scanned full colored pages at 300 DPI can be compressed down to 30 to 100KB files from 25MB.. Black-and-white pages at 300 DPI typically occupy 5 to 30KB when compressed.

This puts the size of high-quality scanned pages on par with an average HTML page (which is typically around 50KB).

This format can also occur with djv file extension.

MIME type used for djvu images:
image/vnd.djvu

A djvu file extension is used for a special image and document file format called DjVu. Typically used for image documents because it can achieve much lower file sizes, compared to other image formats with text, such as JPEG.
