What is an .DEB file?

File extension deb is commonly used for Debian packages. Debian packages are binary files that contain executables, configuration files, man/info pages, copyright information, and other documentation needed to install a program from the package.

These files are used in Debian Linux operating system and its derivates (Ubuntu) as main source of installation packages.

Files with deb extension can be mainly found as Debian distribution packages - compressed archives for Debian Linux operating system. Some archiving utilities, such as 7-zip, are also able to extract the content of DEB packages.


How to open:

Use the terminal or program management tool in Linux to open and install programs out of a DEB package.To install a *.deb file, use the Linux terminal and write the following command:sudo dpkg -i yourpackage.deb

How to convert:

These packages can be extracted with some archiving utilities like 7-zip or converted to another installation package via specialized Linux programs like alien.
