File extension cad is generally related to CAD drawings. CAD means computer-aided design, its the use of computers in the process of design, drafting or drawing.

A typical CAD output is a either 2D or 3D model of some product, part or other technical data. It can include additional data, such as materials used, dimensions, processes etc.

Many programs used and some are still using the cad file extension for their drawing, these are however not compatible with each other.

Currently most CAD programs use the dwg format or the dxf format for  CAD drawings.

Files with cad extension can mostly be found as 3D CAD drawings in various formats. Older formats that were typically replaced by newer ones with unique extension, like DWG.
