What is an .ACM file?

The acm file extension seems to have been primarily related to an audio format featured in several computer games, including Fallout, Baldur's Gate or American Civil War.

Probably related to now obsolete Audio Compression Manager (ACM), which was a Windows multimedia framework for management of audio codecs (compressor/de-compressors). It was replaced by DirectX and its DirectShow component.

It seems there were several versions of this format and not all programs that support ACM may support all of the formats. Especially dedicated converters for game music usually just work for a specific game.

This acm file type entry was marked as obsolete and no longer supported file format.

This type of file is no longer actively used and is most likely obsolete. This is typically the case for system files in old operating systems, file types from long discontinued software, or previous versions of certain file types (like documents, projects etc.) that were replaced in higher versions of their original programs.

Files with acm file extension could be in the past found as audio files in various computer games, including the acclaimed Fallout, Baldur's Gate or American Civil War.

How to open:

Winamp player with ACM plugin should be able to playback these files. It is possible some works with other media players.

How to convert:

You can find conversion utilities on internet that allow gamers to convert ACM audio to WAV. However most of these programs are 10+ years old and the links may be dead.
