File extension fbx is mainly related to Autodesk Kaydara and used for its default file type.

Kaydara FBX is a widely-used standard for the universal exchange and use of 3D content. FBX support is available for all popular 3D authoring tools, like 3D Studio Max, Autodesk Gameware etc.

FBX is not a committee standardized file format such as COLLADA, X3D or VRML2, and hence has trouble with compatibility from one version to another, or even within files created within the same major release version.

The fbx file stores 3D data stored in Kaydara FBX file format.

Files with fbx extension can be found as 3D model files saved in the Autodesk Kaydara 3D data exchange format used in several 3D authoring tools.

How to open:

Use 3D Studio Max or similar 3D modelling program to open and work with *.fbx files.

How to convert:

Autodesk provides special FBX converter that allows users to convert .fbx files to OBJ and few other formats. You can also find some dedicated CAD translation programs like PolyTrans|CAD+DCC can convert FBX format to something else.
