.TAR.GZ File

The tar.gz was popular compression file format used on Unix and Unix based operating systems.

The TAR part of file extension identifies TAR (Tape Archive) archiving utility and .GZ identifies GZip compression file format.  It is old version of Gzip compressed TAR Archive - see TGZ, TAR, TAZ, GZ file extensions. However tar.gz archives are still supported by Unix, Linux, BSD based operating systems.

Use any compression utility such as WinRAR, PowerArchiver, ZipZag to open tar.gz archives.

Can be converted to other archive formarts either directly or via decompress -> compress to another format route.
