What is an .TAR.GZ file?

The tar.gz was popular compression file format used on Unix and Unix based operating systems.

The TAR part of file extension identifies TAR (Tape Archive) archiving utility and .GZ identifies GZip compression file format.  It is old version of Gzip compressed TAR Archive - see TGZ, TAR, TAZ, GZ file extensions. However tar.gz archives are still supported by Unix, Linux, BSD based operating systems.
